The Art in Public Places Committee seeks new members

Orillia, October 28, 2024 – The City of Orillia’s Art in Public Places Committee is inviting applications from individuals with knowledge and expertise in a wide range of arts, culture, and creative disciplines to join the committee. Two (2) positions are currently available.

The committee is tasked with providing expert advice and guidance to the City of Orillia on matters related to the acquisition, donation, commission, loan, and installation of public art within the city, in accordance with City Policy 1.12.6.1 – Art in Public Places.

Valerie Powell, a member of the committee says, “Joining the Art in Public Places Committee offers a unique opportunity to shape the cultural landscape of our community. By participating, you can help create spaces that inspire, engage, and connect people through the power of art. It’s a chance to leave a lasting impact by contributing to the beautification and identity of our shared spaces.”

Committee members must be eligible electors of the City of Orillia. However, up to two of the seven citizen members may be non-residents from a neighbouring municipality if they possess significant and current expertise in arts and culture, particularly with experience working on public art projects.

The Art in Public Places Committee aims to represent a broad spectrum of knowledge and expertise from various arts, culture, and creative disciplines, including but not limited to:

– Artist  

– Arts Administrator or Educator  

– Business Owner/Operator  

– Art History  

– Community Builder  

– Civil Engineer  

– Curator  

– Design Professional  

– Heritage Research or Planning  

– Landscape Architect  

– Local Indigenous Art, Culture, and Heritage  

– Urban Planning or Development  

The committee also values diversity in its composition, striving to include members from various demographics, including young adults (ages 18-30), visible minority groups, women, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, persons across the gender identity spectrum, and others who can contribute to engaging Orillia’s diverse communities.
