By: Hillary Handy

Summer is just around the corner, and with it comes that familiar, almost nostalgic anticipation—the kind that makes us daydream at our desks and stare longingly out the window. There’s something truly magical about planning for those summer days as they hold the promise of joy, exploration, and reconnection.

For kids, summer is a season of endless possibility. It’s the ongoing dream of school-free days filled with adventures big and small. “What will we do? Where can we go?”—these are the questions that fuel youthful excitement as the countdown to the last day of school begins. But for adults, especially those juggling careers and the demands of everyday life, carving out time for a summer getaway requires intentionality. It’s about maximizing that precious window of time and prioritizing fun in a way that leaves you refreshed and recharged.

So, what do you do when those rare stars align—when school’s out, your out-of-office email is set, and the sun is shining? You seize the moment and dive into the rich experiences waiting right here in our own backyard. This charming corner of Ontario transforms into a hub of activity as the season unfolds.

Summer Festivals with Kids

North Simcoe is renowned for its calendar of classic, beloved summer festivals—time-honoured events that bring the community together and draw visitors from near and far. These festivals are more than just entertainment; they’re a celebration of culture, heritage, and the unique spirit of our region. Whether you’re strolling through an arts and crafts fair, tapping your feet at an outdoor concert, or sampling local fare at a food truck gathering, there’s a sense of shared joy that defines the North Simcoe summer experience.

Here are a few Family-Friendly festivals you need to check out this summer as a family, starting in June:

Midland Butter Tart Festival- June 14, 2025:  If there’s one event that puts North Simcoe on the map, it’s the Midland Butter Tart Festival. It’s a sugary celebration of Canada’s most beloved pastry. Live music, artisan markets, family-friendly activities, and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked tarts wafting through the streets. It’s a true feast for the senses. Get the scoop at midland.ca.

Delicious Days of Summer- June 28, 2025: An assortment of food trucks and dessert vendors all gathered in one spot in downtown Orillia. A place where all the picky eaters can find something to eat, in one place! We can get behind this. Plus, if My Best Friends Cupcakes is there, so are we! Mariposa Folk Festival- July 4-6, 2025: This is one of the longest running festivals in our area, featuring artists like Iron & Wine, Waxahatchee, The Sheepdogs, Serena Ryder, The Paper Kites and MORE. Orillia loves Mariposa Folk Festival and this year will prove to be an incredible event once more. This is great for all ages as there is a kid area set-up specifically for the little ones.
