Home for the Holidays: Selling, Buying, or Staying Put?

By: Gillian Stockdale

The moment the clocks fall back, and the air smells like woodsmoke, something shifts. November is that in-between month when pumpkins make way for pine boughs, and we start picturing family gathered around the table; maybe a little more closely than our dining room comfortably allows.

It’s also the time when many homeowners start to ask themselves a big question: Is this still the right home for us?

The November Realization

Between Thanksgiving leftovers and holiday planning, people naturally start reflecting on how their home fits their life. Maybe the kids are grown and you’re ready to downsize before next year’s snow flies. Or maybe your family’s expanding — and the spare bedroom has been doubling as Santa’s gift-wrapping station for far too long.

Whatever the reason, November tends to stir up that familiar feeling: wanting to be home for the holidays but realizing what “home” means is changing.

A Market That Rewards the Thoughtful

Contrary to popular belief, the late-fall real estate market doesn’t freeze up completely. In fact, November can be one of the best times to make a move. With fewer listings on the market, sellers face less competition, and buyers who are still active this time of year tend to be serious and motivated.

Homes also show beautifully in the colder months. Soft lighting, warm colours, and the scent of baking can make a property feel instantly inviting. A well-staged home with holiday touches can help buyers imagine their own celebrations there.

For buyers, it’s also an opportunity to see a home at its most honest. You’ll know right away if the windows are drafty or if the driveway’s a challenge to clear, insights that can save you surprises down the road.

Looking Ahead to the New Year

If a move isn’t in your immediate plans, November is still the perfect time to prepare for 2026. Review your mortgage, start decluttering, and tackle minor repairs that will make your home shine when spring listings bloom again.

And if you’re staying put, there’s joy in that, too. Take time to appreciate the little things; a crackling fire, a good meal, or the comfort of knowing you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Grateful for “Home”

Whether your next chapter involves selling, buying, or simply settling in, November invites us all to pause and give thanks for the places that hold our stories. After all, home isn’t just where we live, It’s where we love, grow, and gather.
